i want to get better at webdesign, how can i improve?
any tips?
useful sites?

A good website requires a good website design. A new design might be the correct answer and the right strategy for the success. A quality design can help your website seek the required attention from the customers. At the same time, it also gives you the confidence that you are projecting your products/services in the best possible way. Some aspects to take care of in the website designing are the front and the back areas. The front areas should involve features such as:
* Attractive design and pictures with use of charts and images
* Limited use of text and increased use of animation
* Easy navigation and linking of the following and related web pages and links
* Shopping cart and order placing facilities along with product description
* Newsletters on recent developments in the sector
* Facility to allow customers to contact you
The last and the most important thing is reviewing and revising. Your web site design should be improved and updated from time to time depending upon the up coming changes. Try and make use of the new technology and expertise. This would help you to beat your competition and establish your name.

A website's design should reflect the primary purpose of the said website.

While at the same time making the design as user friendly as possible while keeping the overall theme relative to the purpose.

However there are certain guidelines that you MUST consider, for instance is the design compatible with a screen reader / magnifier? and if it's not then why?

Are the colour's too bright to see? or would they pose a problem to someone who was colour blind.

Does the design allow for easy navigation and item location without requiring the user to search the entire site to find a simple item?

A design should not be over thought, simplicity is often key.
Chances are you will gain a repeat visitor from simplicity (not overly simple) as opposed to hugely complex and difficult to understand.

There is alot more than could be said, but frankly i'm too lazy to sit here typing. so for now, toodlepip!
