Can I delete "**KB** folders in Windows XP directory or not?

In my windows directory (Windows XP) I have about 30 directories ($NtUninstallKB*****) taking the size of almost 647MB. Can anybody please tell me what are they and can I delete them?

They let you uninstall windows updates,so if you delete them,you cannot use add/remove programs to remove any windows updates.There should be no reason to remove any updates,so yes you can delete them.647 MB is only half a gig are you really desperate for space ?
